 Hi everyone,

For the last year I have been taking on a serious study of esoteric astrology. Traditional exoteric astrology is based on personality/psychological interpretation of the natal chart while esoteric astrology is based on soul/spiritual conciousness interpretation of the chart. Esoteric astrology has been coined "Astrology for the New Age" and several modern Astrologers (such as Alan Oken and Jeff Green) have began to expand on the earlier works of Alice Bailey and Alan Leo.

The believe is that much of humanity has evolved from totaly personailty-centered individuals to individuals who are now doing the important work of merging the personality with the soul. Thus, it has been said that the exoteric approach to chart deliniation will no longer serve the higher purpose toward the evolution of human conciousness.

Esoteric astrology depends on an understanding of the Ancient Wisdom Teachings (7 rays of manifestation, the ten postulates, the Antahkarna or Rainbow Bridge, the Chakras and the Stations of the Cross), esoteric rulerships and spiritual meanings of the planets, aspects and houses.

My purpose with this thread is to share my thoughts, opinions and insights that have came through these studies and hopefully recieve a substantial amount of input from all who enter into this room.

....  Esoteric astrology is not centered on the fate/destiny association of planetary placements. To the contrary, it personality-centered Astrology that has inspired the tendency to view planetary influence as instigators of fated casulity. The esoteric approach leads one to conclude that the ultimate destiny of all individuals is move from an ego-centric approach to life to a soul-centered approach to life. Thus, one is to move from the expression of free-will in the lower self to the expression of free-will in the higher self. This is said to occur in 3 phases (of course with many levels contained within each phase). Phase one (associated with the Mutable Cross) is where through a multitude of experiece in the "world of forms" (physical reality) self-conciousness grows until a healthy ego is created. Phase two (associated with the Fixed Cross) is where the important work of merging the personality with the soul occurs. This is where the concept of "dualism" becomes a major focus in ones life. Phase three (associated with the Cardinal Cross) is where the soul-centered (totally spiritually concious) individual emerges as an initiate to accept her/his "job" of service to humanity.

I believe that the Higher Self incarnates into matter veiled from the I AM consciousness, an ego is manifested through the karmic energies that the soul/spirit body is polarized to become. Now, this happens many "times" in the Eternal Now ....each time a little
different as a result of the veiled ego's choices. A 'learning' takes place as the soul body accumulates this experience....through trial and error to find the path back to the consciousness of At-Oneness....I AM THAT I AM. This polarization of the
soul/spirit body can be seen with each astrological chart of the incarnated Higher Self....or if you will ego. Some metaphysical literature suggests that the soul will become the totality of wisdom and truth of a possible finite archetype. Defined as absonite or total and absolute possibility of finite concept in the Infinite intelligence. This cosmic library of God is accessable to all who chose to persue His Knowledge....it would truly take Eternity to 'live' through each Book in this Akashic Record or God's Library....so when we are spiritualy evolved enough we can read from this Infinite
Intelligence that is held in this Divine Repository.

 I shall share here extracts on my notes taken from "Esoteric Astrology by Alice Bailey" in order for us to perhaps begin to grasp the fundamental difference in Esoteric {Inner} and Exoteric {Outer} astrology as we begin our journey of discovery. Astrologers {according to her} will eventually be divided into two classes, the exoteric astrologers who will be occupied with the horoscope of the personality, and the esoteric astrologers who will be occupied with the purposes of the soul .

The statement is frequently made that astrology is an exact science, but that is far from correct in spite of the many mathematical computations. Astrology is based, curiously enough upon illusion for, as you well know, the zodiac is naught, but the imaginary path of the Sun through the heavens, and this as it appears from the Standpoint of our totally insignificant planet, Earth. The sun is not, as stated, in any sign of the zodiac. It simply appears to be so as it passes between our little ~sphere~, the Earth, and the constellations at any particular time or season.

In ancient days it was believed that the earth was the centre of the solar system and that around it revolved the sun, and all the other planets.

This was the Exoteric knowledge and position, though not the Esoteric understanding. Later, when further discoveries brought more light to the human mind, our planet was decentralised, and the truth was more clearly seen, though much remains as yet to be discovered and may even be of as revolutionary a nature.

From certain astrological angles, a similar process must take place and the solar system must no longer be regarded as a point around which the zodiac revolves or through which the Sun passes in its Great Cycle of approximately 25,000 years.

Astrology is a science which must be restored to its original Beauty and Truth before he world can gain a truer perspective and a more just and accurate appreciation of the divine Plan, as it is expressed at this time through the wisdom of the Ages.

Astrology is ~essentially~ the purest presentation of occult truth in the world at this time, because it is the science which deals with those conditioning and governing energies and forces which play through and upon the whole field of space and all that is found within that field. When this fast is grasped and the sources of these energies are better comprehended and the nature of the field of space is correctly understood, we shall then see a far wider and at the same time a more closely related horizon; the relationships between individual, planetary, systemic and cosmic entities will be grasped, and we shall then begin to live scientifically.

At present, the position of the average believer in astrology is that he is an individual of importance (at least to himself) that he is living on that important planet, the Earth {important to humanity}, and that, through astrology, he can discover his destiny and know what he ought to do. Modern interpretations fail to emphasise the importance of the Rising sign {the Ascendant} and this has been due to the fact that very few have as yet been ready to function as souls; small allowance has been made to allow for the energies which play upon our planet all the time from other constellations or from many ~hidden~ planets.

To met the desire to see a truer a more accurate picture, this has now become possible because group awareness, group relations and group integrity are coming to the fore in human consciousness. As this takes place the personality which is individual, separative and self centred which recede increasingly into the background and the soul, non-separative, group conscious, and inclusive, will come more and more to the fore.

Interest in the individual horoscope will therefore gradually die out, and increasingly the planetary, the systemic and the universal picture will stand out in the awareness of the individual, he will then regard himself only as an integral part of a far more important Whole and his world group will interest him far more than himself, as an individual.

In Esoteric astrology we are therefore, dealing with the Life and Lives which inform the ~points of light~ within the Universal Life. Constellations, solar systems, planets, kingdoms in nature and microscopic are all the result of this activity and the manifestation of energy of certain Lives whose cycle of expression and whose infinite purposes lie outside the comprehension of the most advanced and illuminated minds on our planet.

Esoterisicm teaches (and modern science is rapidly arriving at the same conclusion} that underlying the physical body and its comprehensive and intricate system of nerves is a vital or etheric body which is the counterpart and the true form of the outer and tangible phenomenal aspect. It is like wise the transmission of force to all parts of the human frame and the agent of the indwelling life and consciousness. It determines and conditions the human body, for it is itself the repository and transmitter of energy from the various subjective aspects to man and also from the environment in which man (both inner and outer man) find himself.

Other points should be noted.

First the individual etheric body is not an isolated and separated human vehicle but is, in a peculiar sense, and integral part of the etheric body of that entity which we have called the human family: this kingdom in nature, through its etheric body, is an integral part of the planetary etheric body, the planetary etheric body is not separated off from the other etheric bodies of planets but all of them in their totality along with the etheric body of the sun constitute the etheric body of the solar system.

This is related to the etheric bodies of the six solar systems which, with ours, forms a cosmic unity and into these pour energies and forces from certain great constellations. The field of space is etheric in nature and its vital body is composed of the totality of etheric bodies of all constellations, solar systems and planets which are found therein. Throughout this cosmic golden web there is a constant circulation of energies and forces and this constitutes the scientific basis of the astrological theories.

Just as the forces of the planet and of the inner spiritual man (to mention one factor among many) pour through the etheric body of the individual man upon the physical plane, and condition his outer expression, activities and qualities, so do the varying forces of the universe pour through every part of the etheric body of that entity we call ~space~ and condition and determine the outer expression, the activities and qualities or every form found within the cosmic periphery.

 Within the human etheric body there are to be found seven major force centres which are in the nature of distributing agencies and electrical batteries, providing dynamic force and qualitative energy to the man; the produce definite effects upon his outer physical manifestation. Through their constant activity his quality appears, his Ray tendencies begin to emerge and his point in evolution is clearly indicated. The following attitudes and position taken by the Esoteric astrologer should also be noted.

1 That the ~planetary~ influences indicate the trend of the outer life circumstances. When correctly interpreted for the average man and for the unevolved man they can and do indicate the personality destiny and fate; they do condition and completely control the man who has no conscious soul experience. The moment that a man becomes aware of his own soul and is endeavouring to control his on "path in life" the influence of the planets, per se, definitely weakens and steadily becomes less and less; his personality chart appears inconclusive and most inaccurate. It is the force flowing ~through~ the planets and not the force ~of~ the planets themselves which then governs and controls. The man then becomes receptive to the subtler and higher energies of the solar system and of the twelve governing constellations.

2. That the Sun Sign as it is called, indicates the nature of the main, physical, mental and spiritual. It holds the secret of the personality ray and of the man’s responsiveness of lack of responsiveness to the Soul, the real man. It indicates also the integration already achieved and the present point of unfoldment of the soul qualities, of the present available equipment, of the present life quality and of the immediately possible group relations. It indicates, nothing more. This is a reversal of the usual astrological position. The reason proffered is that humanity is enough evolved so that the astrology of the soul will become possible fore long; it constitutes - from many points of view - a reversal of normal procedure. This is wise, necessary and also inevitable.

3. That the Rising Sign indicates the remoter possibilities, and the spiritual goal and purpose of the immediate incarnation and of the immediate succeeding incarnations. This sign concerns itself with the struggle of the spiritual man " to carry on" from the point achieved so that when the life energy is temporarily exhausted and the "death of the personality" takes place, the mind finds himself "nearer the centre of his life, closer to the centre of his group and approaching the centre of divine life". This particular phrase "death of the personality" has two definite connotations:

(a) It may mean the death of the physical body, which is inevitably followed by the two stages of the death of the emotional vehicle and the subsequent dissipation of the temporary and ever-changing form which the quota of mental energy as assumed during incarnation.

(b) .. The subjective and mystical "death of the personality". This is a phrase indicating the transfer of the focus for the distribution of energy from the personality (a definite centre of focus) to the soul (another definite centre)

By consciously assuming the position of the spiritual Observer, and by cultivating the power to respond to the soul, then from the angle of that soul the man must learn to control circumstance and the attendant reactions of the personality.

In connection with the sun sign, the rising sign and the effect of the thought-form relating to the moon, the principle of esoteric astrology is as follows:

1. The Sun Sign

This sign indicates the ~present~ problem of the man, it sets the pace or the established tempo of his personality life; it is related to quality and temperament and the life tendencies which are seeking expression during this particular incarnation, and it is suggestive of the rajasc or the activity aspect of the innate man. Fundamentally, the forces here found are indicative of the line of least resistance.

2. The Ascendant {or Rising Sign}

Indicates the intended life or immediate soul purpose for this incarnation. It hold the secret of the ~future~ and present the force which rightly used, will led the man to success. It represents the stavic or harmony aspects of life and can produce right relationships between soul and personality in any one incarnation. It thus points the way to the recognition of the force of the soul.

3. The Moon

This type of force (coming from certain planets and not from the moon) indicate that which is ~past~. It, therefore, summarises limitation and the present handicaps. It governs the physical body and shows were the prison of the soul is to be found.

These are posts that I put in the other Esoteric string and then subsequently placed on my Esoteric web pages..therefore they will feel familiar {smile}…yet it is worth reminding ourselves about the Rays, meanings etc as they are such a important part of Esoteric astrology….I will put them in four separate posts and then be back with the esoteric rulers of the Signs etc in a day or so unless someone else would like to contribute here {smile}….

The Seven Rays - Introduction - (1)

The metaphysician believes his duty rests with humanity, rather than with the interests of self. True, a man must develop his talents as the preoccupation with self is really in the interest of evolution. In a large sense esoteric astrology is a branch of the science/art of astrology, difficult to prove, but holy. The esoteric branch of astrology assists a person to intuit the beauty in the Universe for himself; the exoteric branches pay attention to man’s inclination and behaviour as he is physically affected by our solar system. One branch balances the other…as in

"I am me, a soul of humanity, part of space, imbued with and impinged upon by hosts of intelligences in this solar system, integrally part of a seven sun circuit and focussing through all this are the rays"

We are searching for light and we know if we find some ray of it, parts of the truth will be withheld from us. While a certain truth could be explained to a seeker, he would not truly comprehend it until he had in some way experienced it. We have no words to describe invisible realms.

As the spiritual man thinks less about the personal side of life and more in terms of being a link in the macrocosm, he is increasingly drawn to universitality. He as an individual is tuning into nature’s system and its secrets. Esoteric astrology allows you to leave the centre of your being to move out of the personal nucleus into the all-inclusive whole. In doing so you lose neither your individuality nor your identity, the sun and the Ascendant remains with you regardless, along with the accompanying planetary powers.

Just as man is part of humanity, so is his etheric part of humanity’s etheric body. Throughout all there is unity, no such think as separateness except in the minds of unknowing men.

A man should become aware of his several realms of consciousness. His habitised subconscious mind is instinctively obeying, reacting, and responding according to what it has been taught. Then there is his thinking or translating conscious mind, man’s link between his higher and lower self.

Most important is the superconscious mind or soul consciousness, which is mans connection with the one life pervading all and for eternity.

All there is motion, its movement a matter of polarity, of likes and dislikes attracting and repelling, and all the motion is electrical.

Life itself is electricity, through it man lives in an ocean of desire until he renounces his lower side, thus releasing his soul.

Not only is man bathed by and impinged upon by electrical interplay from above, but Earth, too, is a planet emanating magnetism. We are embraced by these uprising vibrations as well for there we reach out impersonally to play out our part. The radiating influences rising up from the Earth are very physical.

Through every minute of the day seven rays of the universe come spiralling through, streaming down through various sources to set different backgrounds which the astrological aspects activate.

These rays belong to the entire Universe, not just to the planet Earth. Rays are Universal forces. Astrology as we view it is solar related. Rays and astrology must work in tandem. Rays first because they are universal; astrology next because it is solar related. Both rays and astrology affect us in different ways. Nature is the aggregate of all there is, known and unknown. Rays are a part of it, such subtle celestial forces of which little is known.

As humanity increases its awareness, this avenue of study will be greatly widened. The individual is born under two highly important Rays, one setting the background for the personality {this one is Sun related} and one from the Soul to will from. This implies an Ascendant connect, since the ascendant is the signature of the causal body. Man is born under all seven rays spreading their effects on his seven bodies - one visible (the temple housing the soul) and the six invisible bodies which interpenetrate the other. Since we are desirous of spiritual growth we are specifically interested in our Soul Ray and personality Ray. These two {in some instances they are the same} must be blended in this life to invite intuition.

The Seven Rays - Introduction - (2)

Rays are Will Energies

The seven Universal Rays reach our planet earth, filtering through unknown sources until they reach Ursa major (Great Bear) and continuing to stream through three fixed stars acting as power centers for earth. These fixed stars form an acute triangle situation between 29 Taurus and 13 Cancer:

Pleiades 29 Taurus (Moon/Mars influence)

Polaris 28 Gemini {Saturn/Venus influence)

Sirius 13 Cancer (Jupiter/Mars influence).

There is a semi-square (45 degrees) encompassing these three transmitting power centers. The triangle is important since it provides the energy to excite the will to evolve within all the kingdoms of God on earth.

Bear in mind that these rays have tremendous influence on civilisations, on world and national affairs.

Man is impinged on by these rays because he is here as part of a group - the kingdom of humanity. Since the new age has called our attention to its arrival we should strive to begin to think in wider realms; not just as earthlings orbiting round a sun, but as minute parts of an entire universe.

Space is more than an entity, more than the aggregate of heaven. It is both the factory and storehouse of collective will. We have a duty to see far beyond what the telescope can see. Ceaselessly we are bathed in streams of foreign energies. As yet we do not feel their potency because we haven’t the evolved mechanism to respond to them.

Here we are beneath the stars on a moving Earth being showered by rays, streaming forces spawned far beyond the celestial tumult of solar winds. It is awesome, yet we must try. Let us begin to look further, beyond what we see, some have already taken the first steps and are beginning to discover new ways of enlightenment as the disciples and initiates of the present, the guiding lights for others.

Without the rays we would not enjoy progressive expression. They are the custodians of the universal plan. The rays are closely allied to the declinations of our natal planets, the signature of the involuntary man. This involuntary part of us - the heart beating without our instructing it, the chemical process of the liver, regeneration of cells, and other various involuntary functions is the self healing (forming) part of our organism.

The manifestation of activity is initiated through the Composite Ray..

These seven rays carry forth divine sparks of recognition. All of the rays embody will energy. Through each ray a specific will is uniquely and magically channelled in sympathy with the dictates of its particular celestial stream in accordance with the universal intention. Man strives, even in the primitive stage, for the development of will, the will to initiate and the will to good. Without spiritual commitment the will becomes wasted on desire. Will and spiritual commitment must be merged into one before will can be utilised in an organised manner, The soul ray plays a predominant role for the spiritually advanced, and for the average man the personality ray is more effective. For whatever reason, one ray is dominant and the other rays lend their wills to it in universal sympathy.

A ray is but a name for a particular force or type of energy, with the emphasis upon the quality which that force exhibits and not upon the form aspect which it creates. The seven primordial energies are beyond complete, exact depiction in words, or even in thoughts on the planes of this world. They are too essential and encompassing to be wholly contained or isolated within our narrow band of the Greater Spectrum. This is a list of some of the more common synonyms:

Ray One - Will, purpose, power, destruction
Ray Two - Love, wisdom, inclusiveness, coherence, magnetism
Ray Three - Active Intelligence, adaptability, creativity
Ray Four - Harmony through conflict, beauty, sensitivity, unity
Ray Five - Concrete knowledge, science, mind, analysis
Ray Six - Devotion, idealism, adherence, force
Ray Seven - Order, ceremony, organisation, group, magic

The ray teaching gives us an energy picture of creation and of life at all levels of being. It provides a means of explaining the intricate interrelationships of all things, spiritual and material; and it proclaims their oneness and interconnectedness. As part of this energy picture of the cosmos, human beings are, of course, themselves composed of ray energies. The various bodies or vehicles of incarnation of the individual human being - the personality, the mind, the soul, etc. - are said to issue forth on one or other of the rays.

The psychological application of the ray hypothesis is of particular interest because it provides a practical energy framework for understanding the make-up of individuals and groups. The rays of a person, when determined, studied and understood, will enable that individual, or his counsellors or therapists, to 'go to the source'. Knowledge of ones' energy-essence and underlying vital composition can be invaluable in developing a balanced program for life.

The author of the information anent the Seven Rays is the Tibetan Master, Djwhal Kuhl. He has been our primary source of information on the seven rays for the past 70 years There have long been hints of this doctrine concealed within the teachings of all great philosophies and religions, but it has not been systematically presented. Astrology, since ancient times, has been divided into exoteric and esoteric branches. The ray teaching, however, has remained esoteric and largely hidden from the world.

The reason for the new emergence of this ancient knowledge at this time seems quite simple. Humanity, the World Disciple, is apparently now ready, and stands on the threshold of a great awakening. New responsibilities, new opportunities and new light are being urged upon us by the Teachers of the race. Concurrent with this expansion is the need for a deeper, conscious penetration by the human race into the essential nature of reality. What was once occult mystery is now rapidly becoming practical science.

Modern physics has concluded that all is energy, that within every form lies an essential network and pattern of energy. The seven ray teaching, in scientific terms, is an hypothesis that asserts the following: All energy within form is fundamentally septenate in character. The energy, as well as the forms derived from it, can be described through seven discrete and archetypal streams.

The seven streams of energy, it is said, are the very vibrations within matter, space and form which define and infuse all objects, all beings and all events in manifestation. They combine and interweave to create all the complex systems we know as reality, from the grandest interstellar spectacle to the smallest mundane occurrence of daily life. As concepts they will be found to be familiar, simple and direct of apprehension. They strike a chord in our consciousness and are, quite literally, closer to us than breath.

In order to understand the "seven streams of force", we are constrained to use verbal and numerical descriptions. But bear in mind that any words we may use are mainly attempts to translate a quality into a form. And, in translations of any kind, something of the original is always lost.

 Seven Rays - Summary Description

The following summaries of the rays based on research in the teachings of the Tibetan, may help to explain the range and focus of each of the seven qualities:

Ray One : Will/Purpose

This energy is the beginning and the final synthesis - the source of all energies. It is the essence of power and energy itself. The first ray is the force of purpose, direction, centralisation and one-ness, of which the will is the keynote. It is characterised by the qualities of intensity, dynamism, quickness, and dominance. It often results in detachment, isolation and crystallization. And out of its force and directness is conceived the power of creative destruction.

Ray Two : Love/Wisdom

Consciousness is born of the second energy, in the union of duality, spirit and matter. This is the source and blending of light and love, magnetism and relationship, inclusiveness and coherence. It is the ray of wisdom, sensitivity and intuition, as well as clarity and attention to detail. This energy is a qualifying, teaching and healing force. It often results in attachment and attraction, and, curiously, establishes our awareness of fear, the antithesis of love and relationship. The second ray is the energy of the entire solar system and hence is also a ray of profound synthesis. Ray Three :Active Intelligence

Activity and intelligence work out from this source, a result of purpose and wisdom. It is the energy of full and great manipulations, creativity and adaptability. Needs are recognised through this force, plans are formulated, material is selected and business is undertaken. The third ray is clear, inherent mental and intellectual ideation in pursuit of truth, with the objective of manifesting in matter and substance. It is the power which evokes form.

Ray Four : Harmony through Conflict

This energy stands symbolically in the centre of the seven and is the magnetic relation of opposites, the point of harmony, bridging and mediation amidst conflict, pain and struggle - in a sense, the fruition the duality rooted in the second ray. It stimulates creativity, art and beauty and is characterised by sensitivity to colour and sound. Discrimination, quickness and a searching for perfection reside here. The intuitive, relational force is strong in this ray, which evokes life, love and understanding.

Ray Five : Concrete Knowledge/Science

This is the energy of concretion into substance, of knowledge and science, and of stimulation in the three worlds. It leads to the searching, analysis and development of ideas, which in the end produces light and wisdom. It is the energy of differentiation and investigation which can lead to separativeness, cleavage and crystallization. But the thoroughness and discrimination with which the fifth force works in the mind and the intellect leads the way ultimately to understanding and to the revelation of truth.

Ray Six :Devotion/Idealism

The seeds of all devotion and desire pour forth through this energy. It generates adherence, intensity and persistence. The determination resident in this ray is a fiery essence, sometimes full of force, fury and even fanatical display and militant violence. Abstraction and aspiration characterise the sixth force, in the sense of an idealistic nature, loyally oriented toward the causal levels of being. The sixth ray is the power to recognise what is right and righteous, the upward tendency and the capacity to see the light.

Ray Seven : Ceremonial Order

This last of the seven is the most tangibly expressive on the outer planes. It is the quality of relationship between spirit and matter and is thus magical. All of life and every expectation is laced with death. Death is a fulfilment one step closer to perfection. Through the fourth ray flow the seeds of death, allowing a release back to the original unit. Through the fourth there is a finishing up to begin again, but in a different way. Ponder the rose bush striving to grow under all conditions, reaching its potentially perfect states, and then the seeds of death of the devolution stage sets in. These seeds of death, though, do not necessarily mean the successful repetition of the same acts. The esotericist knows that unless he wills it death cannot occur. Death is announced by a surge of intuition - from divine will to the individual will, from soul to personality to monad. The monad decides, and the ego obediently responds. What is death anyway, but a passing on to another state.

When soul and spirit (sun) are fused, the reward is intuition - the highest expression of the fourth ray. Intuition is a frequency between one’s soul and the divine spirit. By learning to lubricate the linking thread with conscious effort towards spirituality, the supernormal faculty of intuition begins to flow freely. Under the fourth ray, which divides the outward and inward rays, we have the causes of conflict. Out of the balancing for harmony a trinity is satisfied; a new conflict erupts. Under the fourth ray, if one has achieved harmony through limitation {self set}, the individual can master himself; he wills his intuitions away. Always there is the confrontation between life, the crux of all there is, and the acceptance of limitations. This includes are the kingdoms of God. Remember, we are dealing here with a dominant ray for evolution. At the very moment harmony is achieved by intuitive acceptance, it creates the point of endings, or no return - the seeds of death. When this step of evolution has been completed - it is replaced with another cause for conflict.,

Kernelled in the fourth ray is the breaking loose of destructive will for new construction. When the fourth ray man has achieved harmony through tense conflict, he becomes cosmically conscious and obedient. Through meditation for the unfoldment of truth, he is able to penetrate the laws of life. The consciousness deepens to where his wisdom is supported. He is a goal setter who serves his purposes well. Triumphantly he gains at at-one-ment with all. Through acting and interacting forces, the fourth ray man can see the beautiful side of life. The evolutionary need to move out from previous inward and introverted experience to capture and balance the outer essence of what is already understood.

When dealing with the fourth ray (and for that matter the 5th, 6th and 7th as well) the Holy spirit aspect of the mighty trinity is the underlying factor. Under the fourth ray life and harmony are one and the same. More than under any of the others, here the individual feels encumbered in the earthly form. This is the impulse of the artist, for out of perfect stillness the creative imagination knows no bounds. He needs mental quietude if he is to enjoy insight. The bridge (antahkarana) between the higher and lower self is recognised and utilised through this soul type. Here we find creative darkness before the light, but once that light is seen, there is naught but beauty for those who see all as it was truly meant to be, godly and good. Nothing is more beautiful than nature, this the artist recognises. Every effort is veined with beauty. The dreamers who seek perfect expression are motivated by the fourth ray. It is the resting ray between the first, second and third rays - inwardly seeking and self reliant - and the 5th, 6th and 7th -expressing rays dependant on outer conditions. The fourth ray is the connecting with energy that manifests harmony and beauty between the ensouling 1st, 2nd and 3rd rays and the forming 5th, 6th and 7th. Under the sixth ray, man is a living spark of idealism, born a devoted receiver for the needs of others. Eager to perform duties not necessarily his to accept - for some reasons others are unable to fully respond or perform - this cosmic servant (of the highest potential} lives in a constant state of devoted preparation. Renouncing whatever conflicts with his energy pattern, he will not be talked into what does not come naturally, even at the risk of seeming orthodox. Here is a ray of maximum energy although it is not heavy in the physical sense. Since it arrives at a vibration so high it is difficult to embrace, the average man may well waste this potent energy. The negative tendency is then to avoid responsibility or to procrastinate. The lesson to master is how to excite eagerness of the heart, which must accompany any selfless act. This is a ray of devotion to an ideal, however there is a negative side, an impulsive one to recognise. It has a martian vibration, therefore it is a notable attraction of war and conflict. Man usually reacts to the negative side of most vibrations first, it being the easier path in the short run.

Under the second ray, thoughts are seeded, while the opposite or sixth-ray man is a projector of thought forms created specifically for the common good or at the request of others. His light is pure. His aura becomes radiant.

The sixth ray allows no isolation except for purposes of preparation for a step up in evolution and the social affairs of humanity. "We" (he is at one with God) can help, therefore we are in devoted service", characterises his thinking. He sets his desires aside and strives to become the cause for others. Once on the path, he devotes himself to a spiritual commitment intense and unalterable in direction. Identification teaches him the importance of synthesis and the power of will.

Under the sixth ray the individual leaves the either/or realm and finds the light in the middle of the path. With fiery enthusiasm he gets behind others, projecting his efforts for their progress. Once committed to a cause he is faithful to the end. His idealism is practically spent. So ardent is his single purpose that he has the power to evoke response in others.

The sixth ray is very much the individual expression of the second. Both are full of devotion. To some the Master Jesus appeared to be a revolutionary; he was rejected by many. But later He became and remains a symbolic cause for devotion.

Under the second ray the individual experiences union with the one pervading life; under the sixth ray one feels unity with a common cause. The lesson learned here is one arising out of dissatisfaction; choices made out of dissatisfaction nourish the ideal. Feelings of a sixth ray man are controlled; they are funnelled directly in behalf of the purpose. Devotion is his God; devotion to his purpose is his fulfilment. Sixth ray love manifests as fiery enthusiasm. It is personified by the evangelist, the saint and the loving parent. The sixth ray transmits its energy through the Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces triad. Fading now is the often impulsive sixth ray of Christianity as the seventh ray gradually begins to influence mankind - an influence we are told can be traced back to the lost continent of Atlantic. Under this heavy physical ray, the battle to join spirit with matter is waged, hence it is a sensual ray, the one attached to sex and procreation. It is largely responsible for the mass-meditation movement and for man becoming more service minded. Through human will combined with divine grace regeneration is achieved. Simply the seventh ray provides and facilitates for the coming age.

Under this ray a man may tread the path of initiation. Here there is a focalising on opposites, on polarity, and on the fusing of the masculine and feminine into one throughout all of creation. Truly it is a ray for new order insisting on decency and human rights, assuring all men freedom from mental harassment, to become what they are to be. Focusing through a strong horoscope, the seventh ray man can become a mediator between humanity and the hierarchical brotherhoods - black or white. Its sensual aspect is part of the reason it attracts one toward magic, ritual, spiritual and occult movements. This ray is conductive to earthbound affairs, doing things the hard way, spiritual transformation, exerting the spiritual being, and some scientific research. On the average level it is a Saturnian type energy. Foundations are laid under its focus; there are instigating sees and the ease with which to spread them for new age growth. How one chooses to express ones rays is often described by ones sub- ray; it determines the indivdual choice or path within the energy demands of one’s ray’s impulses. You may be a 4th ray artist with a 6th sub-ray, then your works would reflect fiery devotion to a cause.

Bear in mind that average men react more often to the undesirable or negative aspects of rays, to the vices rather than the virtues. But that is what life is all about, the overcoming for progress, leaving inharmony behind to seek potential.

Each ray has seven sub-divisions beginning with its own and continuing therefrom in numerical sequence. Hence whatever your soul and personality rays may be, you are being subjectively impinged with their sub-rays as well. The sub-ray is the path you will take. One can be born under one ray and feel the added intensity of the sub ray as well. If a man were born a third sub ray of a second soul ray he could well be an astrology teacher. Teaching is an impulse of the second ray; astrology and interpretation are associated with the third.

Example: Born 4:10 am on a Jupiter Thursday, the individual is a seventh personality ray in the second subdivision, or first sub ray of the seventh ray, therefore the subjective path would be one of leadership ability {first ray} within the impulse of the seventh of ceremonial order. The potential, then, may be to become either a bishop or a movie producer, according to the nativity. Using the same example, the soul ray is the 3rd of active intelligence; in the second sub-division or the fourth ray of the third; therefore the soul’s growth depends on how the individual handles conflicts and preserves harmony while transforming his life through the understanding gained. An artistically adaptable intellect would be the expression.

There is little doubt in the esoteric aspect of astrology that the evolution of the soul is tied to this subject. Man is striving to evolve to the point where his vibrationary rate overcomes those of his planets. One by one he manages to overcome them and in so doing he elevates his consciousness, thus lessening the number of subsequent incarnations. The magic of divinity lies within the soul - the keeper of life - not the body. The body is dense matter, the soul is spiritual life. at night the soul leaves the body lying there inanimate while it continues its evolving experiences on other planes.

The force of the planets frequencies issue forth the trend of life’s exterior causes, and these remain in control for the average man until he awakens to his soul’s potential. When a man wisely serves his soul’s purpose, the planets have less and less effect upon him.
