... it's the dividing line between real astrology and fortune telling, wich has to be made clear.
I was doing a chart for somebody yesterday, knowing that this person had experienced very extreme and unfair situations (rape, violence...). I also knew that her health was not very good, making her less than responsive to any fortune telling.
The best I could do, I thought, was to give her hints on how the moon, day after day, would affect her houses and planets. I told her that it would be the best for her in order to channel the most lively and mothering energy in astrology.
My intuition is that soon any astrologer transferring his or her own desires will be easily found guilty of vampirism. There might be lot of them in that situation.
Astrology has come so exoteric that those powerful astrologers who used to rule kings and nations (some still do in Asia) because of ignorance, cannot go much further.
Am I a bit too optimistic?
I suggest you read my recent interventions (2) in the Mars room.
Keep faith in your questioning the value of this too common kind of astrological counselling.
If only we could look at the sky more often, than we would catch the new paradigm. But most of us live in human fish banks (fish groups) i.e. cities. Pisces era. The sky has turned all black for many of us.
Ciao.

Some hints for a good chart interpretation:
Show this person that you cannot say anything about her future.
Teach this person the basics of astrology.
*** Let this person see how your chart and his/her are linked.
Show to this person the sky and how people used to find intense joy in looking at it.
Help this person to develop an ability to feel the sky (Chi Kung, prayer, art).

.... Just a few pointers:
Use euphemisms. Emphasize the good and the opportunities, but be gentle about the problems. Be optimistic. Always follow a problem with a solution. Don't mention astrological jargon unless they ask for it.

Hi folks. Sound comments, cool. I'd like to add to Pathfinder's comment. Follow a problem with a solution, and also emphasize the aspect of personal Choice. Give the person choices.
And don't feel bad if they still don't make a "right" choice, who are we to judge. The point is that some situations may need to be experienced. The canvassing of Choices before hand works better BEFORE than if delivered 'After the fact'. I've seen this validated time and time again.
My private theory for the difference is that before things are passive and not confronting. It is like a fire drill. So if there is an 'after' the person can fall back on the "drill" as a resource.
Thanks folks, w.

I love the comments in this string. Emphasize the patterns in the chart, in away a person can recognize how they color they life and experiences are connected, and not just incidents. I often tell them my interpretations come trough my own matrix of the language I use. So I chalenge them to look in to there lives and to see that certain traits come back in a diffrent shape evrey time and chalenge them to be creative and regognize how things come back in a different way of appearency. I also use metafores or write a farytale about the chart to stimulate the transferr from the abstract world of cosmic symbolism to the world of experience of the individual. Most of the time it is my intuative choice where to start in the diologe I try to have with the client.
To be a good astrologer and psychosocial worker I went back to school and did undergo training in counseling. And studied psychology. I have 1,5 year more to go and after that, I can 't stop grow myself. I want to follow a school in perhaps creative therapy. I do not know yet.
What I want to say is that I feel as an astrologer I must be modest, there is more to learn and the only thing I can do is give my idea from my viewpoint, not more and not less. The client is an idividual with an personal wolrd of experience. What I try to do is to make contact with that world and try to speak the language of the client from his/her perspective. And step back again keep in contact with my own centre.
Fortune telling is something I want to keep far away from. That is what I tell my clients to.
Also I ask them what is an important issue for them at the moment they come to me and ask them to write it down. And after that I focus on this.

Hi all! Thanks very much for your contributions, they were really helpful. A book that I'm using to help me is by Noel Tyl "Communicating the horoscope". It has many contributors including Donna Cunningham and Diane Stone. Will, thank you again for contributing. As I recently moved house under a Uranus 4th transit quite out of the blue I mislaid your birth details and would dearly love to look at your chart and give you feedback.E-mail me! Thank you all again,
DB
